The Area

Corstopitum in Corbridge was built by the Romans to guard the bridge over the river Tyne. The site includes the remains of a storehouse, the largest Roman building in Britain. The museum shows archaeological discoveries found on the site. Corbridge is a picture-postcard  town with a range of specialist shops offering clothes, art, pottery and unusual kitchen implements. It also host a number of big events throughout the year including the Nothumberland County Show, Steam engine rally, Super Car show,, wine festival and a huge annual beer festival.

Hexham is a large market town just 2 miles away with excellent train and bus connections with  Newcastle and the Gateshead Metro Centre which are around 20 miles away. Newcastle's Eldon Square is one of the premier shopping malls in the UK and the Metro Centre, just across the river, in Gateshead was the first out of town Shopping Centre in the UK and is still one of the largest in Europe.

Hexham Abbey was built in the 12th and 13th centuries using stone from Corstopitum. The Moot Hall dates back to the 15th century and the old gaol, built in the 13th century, now houses the Border History Museum. The market town has lots of history and character with tempting tea rooms, historic buildings lively markets and interesting shops. Hexham has a cinema, theatre and many pubs and restaurants including Indian, Chinese, Italian and Thai.

The beautiful city of Durham with its World Heritage Cathedral is just 40 minutes away by car and is a wonderful place to spend a day out with lots to do for all the family.

This is an excellent walking centre as it is close to Hadrians Wall, with its impressive range of forts and milecastles, and the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are two national trails –the Pennine Way and the Hadrian’s Wall Path and a number of long distance walking, cycling and horse riding routes close by.

There are many golf clubs nearby including the Slaley Hall Championship Course, Matfen Hall and Hexham.

There are several wedding venues nearby, including Langley Castle, and Linnels Coach House is an excellent and convenient place for a family or friends to base themselves for such a weekend.
